Update of Product Group 17 Announced – Consultation Process Opened
The GKV-Spitzenverband (National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds) has decided to update product group 17 ’medical aids for compression therapy' and has officially announced this on 26 May 2025. This measure affects the care of patients with chronic venous insufficiency, lymphoedema and other circulatory disorders and has a direct impact on the listing and reimbursement eligibility of relevant products.

What Exactly is Being Changed?
The announced update includes:
- extendet requirements regarding material and functionality
- integration of new technologies
- clarifications regarding reimbursement procedures
- updating existing descriptions of assistive devices
The update is made in accordance with Section 139 of the German Social Code, Book V (SGB V), which requires the German Medical Technical Aids Register (HMV) to be continuously adapted to medical progress.
Consultation process is opened – deadline has to be respected
The GKV-SV has simultaneauosly initiated the consultation process. Patient advocacy groups are called upon to submit their comments by the deadline specified in Section 140f (4) of the German Social Code, Book V (SGB V), and thus actively participate in the consultation process.

Manufacturers should check their existing product portfolios against the new requirements. This is the only way to ensure continued listing in the HMV.
