In mid-November 2025, a memorandum of understanding was published by the United States, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. On the basis of this memorandum, the United States intends to reduce customs duties on imports from the two smaller countries to 15 per cent. The medical device industry can also benefit from this.
Tariff Dispute Escalated in 2025
Everyone will remember this. At the end of last year, US President Donald Trump made headlines worldwide with his draconian and often seemingly absurd tariffs. In Europe, Switzerland and Liechtenstein were hit with particularly high tariffs of over 30 per cent. Medical device manufacturers in Switzerland suffered as a result of this trade policy.
Relief in Sight
At the beginning of November, representatives from the three nations met. Customs duties of over 30 per cent will remain in place for the time being, but there is reason for hope: a letter of intent shows the US's willingness to reduce tariffs to 15 per cent soon. This naturally also affects the medical technology industry, and manufacturers in Switzerland can hope to export to the US more profitably again soon.
Take advantage of the niches created by the customs dispute in 2025 and place your innovations on the US market now.
